Here: So you don’t get embarassed, or for inspiration, or to get you started, here’s my story.
The drum major called set and I was having a bad day. My hands were shaking so badly that when I snapped my sticks in, I almost dropped them, and I heard audience members laugh. Then I counted the duts incorrectly and stepped off on the wrong foot. I bsed my way through the first movement. And I tried to breathe in between the 1st and 2nd, but I could feel myself starting to panic. In the second movement, I got sandwiched in between a snare and a clarinet, and my drum got totally slammed…it really hurt. I couldn’t find a good spot to get back into the music after that. I later found out my grip was terrible the whole time. In between the 2nd and 3rd, I actually was panicking. Third movement I was just trying not to cry. And after we got back to the bus I broke down. We lost terribly, and the next day my percussion instructor called me out on screwing up. I felt like shit….but I do have to tell you, that looking back on it, I’m glad I at least took responsibility for it, and now I’m a better drummer and performer for it.
